Petzl ZIGZAG D22A – Mechanical Prusik for Tree Care
The Petzl ZIGZAG D22A mechanical Prusik provides efficient and controlled movement within the tree. Its operation follows the familiar technique of a traditional Prusik pulley system.
The connected friction links support smooth and precise movement along the rope. A wide pulley mounted on sealed ball bearings makes it easier to take up slack. The ZIGZAG D22A is designed exclusively for doubled-rope systems and EN 1891 type A low-stretch kernmantle ropes from 11.5 to 13 mm in diameter.
Precise Control on Doubled Ropes
The spring-mounted release lever provides precise control when releasing and locking the device. The speed of movement can be regulated by adjusting the pressure applied to the lever.
The friction links provide progressive braking for smooth movement. When the release lever is released, the device locks on the rope again.
Ball-Bearing Pulley and Swivel
The integrated pulley runs on sealed ball bearings, making it easier to take up slack. The swivel helps keep the device correctly positioned and supports efficient rope glide through the system.
The upper attachment point is designed for connecting the returning rope end in a doubled-rope system. A flexible positioning ring helps keep the connector oriented along its major axis.
Compatibility and Limitations
The Petzl ZIGZAG D22A is designed exclusively for doubled-rope use. This version is not intended for stationary single-rope use or for combination with the CHICANE accessory developed for later ZIGZAG models.
It is compatible with EN 1891 type A low-stretch kernmantle ropes from 11.5 to 13 mm in diameter. The maximum working load is 140 kg.
Difference from the Current ZIGZAG
The ZIGZAG D22A is the earlier 320 g version designed exclusively for doubled-rope systems. The current D022AA00 model weighs 365 g and has a different construction with expanded application options.
Technical specifications from these generations must not be combined. The ZIGZAG PLUS is also a separate model.
Our Assessment
The ZIGZAG D22A provides intuitive operation, precise speed control and efficient slack management for professional doubled-rope tree care systems.
It is particularly relevant for users specifically looking for the earlier D22A version or adding to an existing doubled-rope setup. For a new stationary single-rope system, the current ZIGZAG with the appropriate accessories is the more suitable choice.
