A comfort classic for long climbing days
The La Sportiva Mythos has been one of the best-known climbing shoes for long routes and extended days on rock since 1991. Its strength is not aggressive downturn but the combination of comfort, adaptability and reliable support.
Its natural shape allows a more relaxed toe position than highly asymmetric performance shoes. This makes the Mythos particularly suitable for multi-pitch routes, alpine rock climbing and days when the shoe must be worn for extended periods.
Adaptable unlined suede upper
The upper is made from unlined suede leather. During use, the leather adapts to the individual shape of the foot and gives the Mythos its exceptionally accommodating character.
Because the leather can stretch noticeably, the shoe should initially fit closely without empty spaces. For long routes, the fit can remain comfort-oriented. Excessive downsizing would reduce the Mythos’ main advantage: lasting comfort.
Patented Mythos Lacing System
The patented Mythos Lacing System distributes tension evenly across the entire foot. The lacing extends around the shoe, allowing precise adjustment of both forefoot volume and heel fit.
This enables the Mythos to accommodate different foot shapes and allows the fit to be readjusted during a long climbing day. The lacing provides finer volume control than a hook-and-loop climbing shoe.
Vibram® XS Edge support and durability
The 4 mm Vibram® XS Edge outsole is designed for support, shape stability and controlled edging. It deforms less under pressure than softer rubber compounds, providing reliable support on edges and smaller footholds.
A 1.1 mm LaSpoFlex midsole complements the outsole and creates a balanced combination of support and sensitivity. The Mythos remains comfortable without feeling completely unsupported during longer routes.
Multi-pitch, alpine and crack climbing
The Mythos is particularly well suited to traditional rock climbing, multi-pitch routes and alpine use. Its flatter shape and adaptable leather also make it comfortable in cracks, as it places less aggressive pressure on the toe joints than highly downturned shoes.
The Mythos can also be used for occasional indoor and sport climbing. Its greatest strengths, however, become apparent during long days on rock where comfort and a reliable fit are more important than maximum downturn.
Fit and sizing
The Mythos is a unisex model with a comfort-oriented and minimally aggressive shape. La Sportiva specifically classifies it as a non-wide-fit shoe. This does not mean it is suitable only for very narrow feet: the unlined leather and extensive lacing system allow considerable adjustment of the internal volume.
In our assessment, the Mythos is best suited to narrow or average-width feet and can also accommodate somewhat fuller foot shapes when sized appropriately. Very wide feet should ensure that the sole width matches the foot rather than relying solely on the leather stretching sideways.
For a comfort-oriented multi-pitch fit, approximately 1 to 1.5 EU sizes below regular street-shoe size is a useful starting point. For a closer sport-climbing fit, approximately 1.5 to 2.5 EU sizes below street size may be appropriate. Because the unlined leather stretches, the shoe should not be purchased too loosely.
Our assessment
The Mythos is one of the best La Sportiva climbing shoes for long routes and comfort-focused rock climbing. Its patented lacing system and adaptable leather make it particularly suitable for climbers who develop pressure points in rigid or heavily rubberised shoes.
The Mythos is not designed for modern competition bouldering, extreme overhangs or aggressive toe hooks. It lacks the high tension and extensive toe rubber of current bouldering models. Despite its XS Edge sole, it also cannot match the precision of a Miura, Katana or Otaki on the smallest footholds.
For multi-pitch routes, traditional rock climbing and long days on the wall, however, the Mythos remains an exceptionally adaptable and dependable classic.
