Petzl GRIGRI + – Belay Device with Anti-Panic Handle
The Petzl GRIGRI + is a cam-assisted blocking belay device for lead and top-rope climbing in the gym or at the crag. It is particularly focused on controlled lowering and learning or practicing the correct belaying technique.
Its integrated anti-panic handle and ASSIST + top-rope mode distinguish the GRIGRI + from the standard GRIGRI. These additional functions make it particularly suitable for beginners, climbing courses, clubs, families and users who prefer additional assistance while belaying.
Cam-Assisted Blocking
When the climber falls or weights the rope, the cam assists the belayer in stopping the rope. Tension applied to the brake strand causes the cam to rotate and pinch the rope inside the device.
Operation follows standard Petzl belaying techniques. One hand must always remain on the brake strand. Cam-assisted blocking does not replace the brake hand or proper instruction in the use of the device.
Diagrams engraved on the inside and outside of the device make correct rope installation easier.
Anti-Panic Handle for Controlled Lowering
The ergonomic handle allows the belayer to regulate the climber's descent. If the handle is pulled too far or too hard, the anti-panic function engages and stops the rope from feeding through the device.
The handle and camming mechanism provide a mechanical advantage of 3:1. This reduces the effort required to smoothly control the rate of descent, regardless of rope diameter.
The anti-panic function is particularly helpful when learning how to lower a climber. It remains an additional assistance feature and does not replace correct belaying technique.
ASSIST + for Top-Rope Belaying
In ASSIST + mode, the blocking action of the cam is pre-activated. This makes it easier to take in slack while top-rope belaying and supports blocking if the belayer accidentally releases the brake strand.
The designated lead-climbing mode is used when belaying a lead climber. It supports controlled rope feeding while the required brake-hand position is maintained.
Compatible with 8.5–11 mm Single Ropes
The GRIGRI + is compatible with dynamic single ropes from 8.5 to 11 mm and is optimized for diameters between 8.9 and 10.5 mm.
Rope condition, surface treatment and age also influence handling. Thin or new ropes may feed more quickly than thicker or more heavily used ropes.
Durable and Resource-Conscious Construction
The side plates are made from aluminum, while the friction plate and cam are made from stainless steel to withstand regular contact with the climbing rope.
On the current generation, all plastic components, including the handle, are made from recycled nylon. The GRIGRI + weighs 200 g and is certified to CE EN 15151-1 and UIAA standards.
Our Assessment
The Petzl GRIGRI + is particularly well suited to beginners, climbing courses, clubs and climbers who primarily belay on top rope. Its anti-panic handle and ASSIST + mode provide additional assistance when learning how to lower a climber and take in slack.
Experienced sport climbers looking for a lighter and more direct device primarily for lead climbing may prefer the standard GRIGRI. The GRIGRI + is the stronger choice when additional assistance functions and top-rope performance are the priorities.
