Petzl RIG – Compact Descender for Expert Users
The Petzl RIG is a compact descender designed for experienced rope-access technicians, professional work-at-height users and technical rescue teams. It is intended for people who work on rope regularly and require precise control during descent.
Its ergonomic handle provides controlled operation, while the AUTO-LOCK system blocks the rope when the handle is released and makes positioning at a workstation easier.
The current RIG is available as a standard model and in two repairable versions.
AUTO-LOCK System for Work Positioning
The AUTO-LOCK system allows the user to position themselves at a workstation without holding the handle or tying off the device. When the handle is released, the rope automatically blocks inside the device.
Once the rope is blocked, short ascents can be made by pulling the rope through the device without operating the handle.
When the rope is removed, the handle automatically moves into its storage position. This reduces the risk of the descender accidentally snagging while it is carried on the harness.
Two Descent Modes
The ergonomic handle provides a secure grip and precise control of the descent speed. Depending on the application, the rope can be routed in two ways:
The V-shaped friction channel improves descent control and helps limit rope twisting.
The RIG does not have the anti-panic handle or error-catch function found on the Petzl I’D. It is therefore intended specifically for trained and experienced users.
Easy Rope Installation
Markings and a rope guide make correct rope installation easier. The moving side plate incorporates a safety gate and can be opened while the RIG remains connected to the harness.
This allows the rope to be installed and intermediate anchors to be passed without completely disconnecting the device from the harness, reducing the risk of dropping or losing it during transitions.
Versatile Applications
The Petzl RIG can be connected to the user's harness or installed on an anchor. In addition to use as a descender, trained users can employ it for lead belaying with the appropriate climbing techniques.
Typical applications include:
-
Rope-access work
-
Industrial climbing
-
Work in difficult-to-access areas
-
Work positioning
-
Technical rescue
-
One- or two-person descent
-
Short rope ascents
-
Lead belaying by trained users
Rope Compatibility and Working Loads
The current Petzl RIG is compatible with ropes from 9.5 to 11.5 mm in diameter.
The working load limit for one person is 140 kg. In rescue situations, the device may be used for two-person loads of up to 200 kg in accordance with the Instructions for Use.
The 200 kg specification applies exclusively to the designated two-person rescue configuration. It is not the general working load limit for one-person use.
Durable Construction
The RIG is made from aluminum, stainless steel and nylon. Reinforced protection in the rope-friction zone helps prevent premature wear on the moving side plate.
The shape of the cam improves rope pinching while limiting wear on the device. Every current RIG version weighs 406 g.
Standard or Repairable Version?
The standard D021AB00 model is available in Yellow. It provides all functions of the current RIG but does not have a replaceable cam.
The repairable D021BA00 and D021BA01 versions are intended for intensive use and demanding working conditions. Their cam and pin can be replaced using the separately available D021CA00 repair kit.
The repairable version is available in Yellow and Black. Repairs must be carried out according to Petzl's instructions and using the designated original repair kit.
RIG or I’D?
The RIG is compact and designed for experienced users who prefer direct and precise operation. It features the AUTO-LOCK system but does not include an anti-panic handle or error-catch function.
The Petzl I’D provides additional assistance and safety functions. It can be the more appropriate choice for training, rescue systems and applications where additional protection against certain operating errors is required.
Our Assessment
The current Petzl RIG is an excellent option for experienced rope-access technicians and rescuers looking for a compact, versatile and precisely controlled descender.
The standard version is generally sufficient for occasional use. For daily operation, intensive rope friction or demanding working conditions, we recommend the repairable version. Its replaceable cam can significantly improve the device's economic service life.
