Petzl Volta 9.2 mm – Lightweight Rope for Rock and Ice
The Petzl Volta 9.2 mm is a lightweight, triple-certified climbing rope for performance climbing and mountaineering. Depending on the intended belaying technique, it can be used as a single, half or twin rope.
Weighing 55 g per meter, the Volta provides an effective balance between diameter and weight. Available lengths range from 30 m for classic mountaineering to 100 m for long rock and multi-pitch routes.
Duratec Dry for Changing Conditions
The water-repellent Duratec Dry treatment increases resistance to water, dirt and abrasion. This helps the rope retain its handling, grip and performance characteristics for longer in cold and wet conditions.
It is designed for use on rock and in mixed, snow and ice environments. According to Petzl's current specifications, the Duratec Dry treatment is free from intentionally added PFAS.
Construction and Handling
The EverFlex treatment uses a specific thermal process to stabilize the strands. This provides consistent, lasting handling when coiling the rope, managing loops and paying out slack through a belay device.
UltraSonic Finish bonds the core and sheath together at the rope ends. This increases durability and helps prevent the ends from splitting or fraying prematurely.
The ClimbReady coil makes initial uncoiling easier and reduces the risk of mistakes when laying out a new rope. A Middle Mark identifies the center of the rope to simplify rope management and preparation for rappelling.
Its 40-carrier hollow-braid construction provides good grip and supports controlled handling.
Single, Half and Twin Rope
The Petzl Volta is certified under EN 892 for three different types of use:
-
A single rope is used as one individual strand.
-
Half-rope techniques use two strands that are clipped according to the chosen belaying system.
-
Twin-rope techniques use both strands together.
Each method requires suitable training and the correct belaying technique. Due to the slim 9.2 mm diameter, compatibility with the selected belay device must also be checked before use.
Colors and Lengths
Orange is available in 30, 50, 60, 70, 80 and 100 m. Gray is available in 50, 60, 70 and 80 m.
A 40 m version is not part of Petzl's official Volta 9.2 mm range.
Our Assessment
The Petzl Volta 9.2 mm is particularly suitable for climbers and mountaineers looking to reduce weight on demanding routes while retaining the flexibility of a multi-type rope. Its triple certification supports different rope systems, while Duratec Dry, EverFlex and UltraSonic Finish are designed for changing alpine conditions and long-term use.
