Petzl GriGri – Versatile Belay Device with Cam-Assisted Blocking
The Petzl GriGri is a compact and versatile belay device with cam-assisted blocking. It is designed for lead and top-rope climbing in the gym and at the crag.
When the climber falls or weights the system, the cam assists in blocking the rope. This function increases belaying comfort but does not replace correct belay technique or the requirement to keep hold of the brake side of the rope.
Construction and Performance
When the rope becomes tensioned during a fall or while the climber rests, the integrated cam rotates and pinches the rope between the cam and friction plate. This assists the belayer in holding the load.
Feeding slack and catching a fall are performed using the techniques specified for Petzl belay devices. A hand must remain on the brake side of the rope at all times. Cam-assisted blocking provides greater tolerance for the position of the brake-side hand, regardless of the angle between the climber side and brake side of the rope.
Engraved diagrams make it easier to install the rope correctly. They allow the direction of the climber side and brake side of the rope to be checked before every use.
For lowering, the ergonomic handle controls the release of the cam. The handle mechanism provides a 3:1 mechanical advantage to support smooth control across the approved range of rope diameters.
The side plates are made from aluminium. The friction plate and cam are made from stainless steel, while the handle is made from reinforced nylon. At 175 g, the GriGri combines durable construction with a comparatively compact format.
Rope Compatibility and Applications
The Petzl GriGri is designed exclusively for dynamic single ropes with the following diameters:
Within the optimised range, the device provides a particularly balanced combination of slack feeding, blocking action and lowering control. Rope condition, stiffness and surface characteristics also affect handling.
The GriGri is suitable for:
The device is not designed for half or twin ropes.
Our Assessment
The Petzl GriGri is our clear all-round recommendation for lead and top-rope climbing in the gym and at the crag. It provides a strong balance of compact construction, low weight, belaying comfort and controlled lowering.
Compared with the GriGri Plus, the standard GriGri is 25 g lighter and more compact. However, it does not have an anti-panic handle or the dedicated ASSIST Plus mode. The GriGri Plus can therefore be the more appropriate choice for climbing courses, beginners and top-rope-focused use.
The Petzl Neox is more strongly optimised for comfortable slack feeding during lead climbing through its integrated wheel. The standard GriGri remains the balanced choice for climbers who regularly combine lead and top-rope climbing.
