Petzl ROLLCLIP Z – Carabiner with Integrated Pulley
The Petzl ROLLCLIP Z combines a carabiner with a ball-bearing pulley. Its gate opens on the side opposite the pulley, making it easier to install the carabiner on anchors and devices.
This compact design is suitable for professional rope access, technical rescue systems, haul systems, short rope ascents and tree care applications. The ROLLCLIP Z is available with either an automatic TRIACT-LOCK or a manual SCREW-LOCK locking system.
Construction and Performance
The 18 mm sheave runs on a sealed ball bearing and provides an efficiency of 85%. The ROLLCLIP Z is designed for ropes from 7 to 13 mm in diameter.
The aluminum carabiner's H-shaped frame offers an effective balance between strength and weight while protecting the product markings against abrasion. Its Keylock system helps prevent accidental snagging during installation on devices, anchors and other equipment.
The pulley has a maximum working load of 2 × 2 kN, or 4 kN in total. The carabiner provides a major-axis strength of 20 kN, a minor-axis strength of 8 kN and an open-gate strength of 7 kN.
TRIACT-LOCK or SCREW-LOCK?
The TRIACT-LOCK version locks automatically and requires three consecutive actions to open. It weighs 110 g and provides a gate opening of 20 mm.
The SCREW-LOCK version is locked manually. A red band remains visible while the sleeve is not fully locked. This version weighs 105 g and provides a gate opening of 21 mm.
Applications
The ROLLCLIP Z can be used as a redirect on the upper attachment point of a Petzl ASCENSION handled rope clamp during short rope ascents. Its gate opens on the non-pulley side, making installation on the ASCENSION easier.
For tree care applications, the ROLLCLIP Z can connect a Petzl ZIGZAG to the attachment bridge of a SEQUOIA harness, improving lateral mobility.
ROLLCLIP Z or ROLLCLIP A?
On the ROLLCLIP Z, the gate opens on the side opposite the pulley. This makes it easier to install the carabiner on anchors and devices.
On the ROLLCLIP A, the gate opens on the pulley side. This configuration makes it easier to install the rope while the carabiner is already attached to an anchor point.
Our Assessment
The ROLLCLIP Z is the appropriate version when quick and easy installation of the carabiner on devices or anchors is the priority. Its main strengths are the compact combination of carabiner and pulley, high efficiency and the choice between automatic and manual locking systems.
Gate orientation is more important than the locking system when choosing between the ROLLCLIP A and Z. Choose the ROLLCLIP A when rope installation is the priority and the ROLLCLIP Z when connecting to devices or anchors is the primary requirement.
