Petzl Tibloc – Ultra-Lightweight Emergency Ascender
The Petzl Tibloc is an ultra-lightweight and extremely compact emergency ascender for short rope ascents, setting up haul systems and self-rescue situations. It can also be used as a mechanical alternative to a friction hitch.
Weighing only 35 g, the Tibloc can be carried permanently on a climbing harness or in a pack. It provides a versatile rope-clamping device for alpine tours, glacier travel and multi-pitch climbing without adding unnecessary weight to the equipment.
Construction and Performance
An automatic system presses the carabiner against the rope to initiate the clamping action. This allows the ascender to engage directly with the rope regardless of its initial position.
The toothed cam is made from stainless steel. Its angled teeth provide reliable contact with the rope, while an integrated evacuation slot supports effective operation on muddy or icy ropes.
A clearly visible marking on the ascender indicates the correct installation direction. The all-stainless-steel construction is compact, durable and designed to keep weight to an absolute minimum.
The Tibloc can be used as a compact ascender for short rope ascents or as a progress-capture device in a haul system. A compatible carabiner is required for operation.
Rope and Carabiner Compatibility
The standard rope compatibility range is 8 to 11 mm.
The Tibloc is compatible with all Petzl carabiner models except the Petzl SPIRIT. Functional compatibility with carabiners from other manufacturers must be assessed in accordance with the instructions for use.
Two specific manufacturer approvals also apply to 6 mm cords:
The PUR’LINE approval must not be transferred to rope ascent, person rescue or other applications.
Our Assessment
The Petzl Tibloc is one of the most useful compact additions to an alpine safety and self-rescue kit. Its greatest advantage is its ability to perform several tasks at only 35 g: rope ascent, progress capture in a haul system and replacement of a friction hitch in suitable self-rescue systems.
It is particularly recommended for alpine tours, crevasse rescue, multi-pitch routes and mountaineering objectives where minimal weight and pack size are important.
A full-size ascender provides greater comfort for frequent or extended rope ascents. The Tibloc is best understood as an excellent ultra-lightweight emergency and backup solution whose correct operation should be practised in advance.
